Here's my rendition of an old classic. I had heard Amazing Grace sung to the tune of HRS, but I'd never heard the two put together before. It seemed appropriate to me, because it states both the problem (we were lost in sin) and the solution (we're are saved by grace). There is a house in New Or
leans They call The Rising Sun. And it's been the ruin of many-a poor boy, And God I know I'm one. Amazing grace, how sweet the sound That saved a wretch like me. I once was lost, but now am found; Was blind, but now I see. My mother was a taylor. She sewed my new blue jeans. My father was a gambl
ing man Down in New Orleans. 'Tis grace that taught my heart to fear, And grace my fears relieved. How precious did that grace appear The hour I first believed. Now the only thing a gambler needs Is a suitcase and a trunk; And the only time that he's satisfied Is when he's on a drunk. Through ma
ny dangers, toils and snares I have already come 'Tis grace that brought me safe thus far, And grace will lead me home. Now mother, tell you children Not to do what I have done; To spend your life in sin and misery In the House of the Rising Sun. When we've been there ten thousand years, Bright sh
ining as the sun, We've no less days to sing God's praise Then when we first begun!

I don't know, but I first heard it done in the '70s. I had never heard anyone sing the words together as in this rendition before I did it in 1997. I'm sure someone must have done it, but I had never heard it before I did it.

I think you also should think outside of the box as you said. The meaning of this song is very uncertain. You gave your own theory about the meaning and that doesn't mean that yours is "outside of the box". This song has its' roots many years ago and even great musicologists don't have the one and real answer for it's meaning. You are free to believe what you think as right like everyone here. But i don't think you are licensed to tell anyone what to believe and if he thinks "outside of the box"

First of all, I don't know which song you're talking about, AG or HRS. Secondly, I was addressing my comment primarily to musicmanelvis, and to you and others only as bystanders as it were. Thirdly, there is no mystery as to the meaning of the words to either AG or HRS. The message in both songs is pretty straight forward. All I did was make an allegoric arrangement of the two songs. MY MEANING in doing so was to illustrate the gospel, HRS being the problem and AG being the solution.

Usually, people "get it" right away without having to think outside of any box. The ones who seem to have the most difficulty are those who have very strong opinions about what is acceptable to God musically, or those who refuse to believe there is a God at all. It is to those whose mindsets are thus handicapped that I suggest thinking outside the box. By the way, since when does a song HAVE to have only one true meaning? If it speaks to your heart/mind in a way I have yet to see, wonderful!

1st-HRS 2nd-When you make a discussion in common ground you accept comments from a 3rd person. 3rd-The meaning in HRS is uncertain. Not my words. There are many meanings of this song. But you try to give the impression of the sacred meaning. If you did that in your allegory i accept it.But HRS itself has nothing to do with religious issues

And now.If someone think inside the box here is you.Your generalizations seem at least funny to my eyes. You wrote:"The ones who seem to have the most difficulty are those who have very strong opinions about what is acceptable to God musically, or those who refuse to believe there is a God at all" Well keep it for yourself that. You who believe things that others told you,you believe that you think outside of the box! That's pretty ironic. And btw i'm a christian tired of extremely religious ppl.

"HRS itself has nothing to do with religious issues." I couldn't agree more. But it does have everything to do with total despair and resignation to the imprisonment of the "ball and chain" of a life of prostitution which the protagonist was warning her little sister against in the original version (the imprisonment of immoral vice from a man's perspective in the Animals' version). The song leaves one with the impression that there is no way to free oneself from that life of "sin and misery."
So, while it has ... ( 2 months ago by guitmartiman)
So, while it has nothing to do with "religion" per se, the protagonist at least acknowledges that she/he's returning to the "ball and chain" and "sin and misery." My intention, by adding the words of Amazing Grace to this profoundly sad and despairing song was to offer to the protagonist (you and me, metaphorically speaking) what I believe to be the best solution to this apparent dilemma. For what it's worth, that's why I put this arrangement together.
I had no intention ... ( 2 months ago by guitmartiman)
I had no intention of implying that the "original meaning" of HRS ever had any religious connotations, though the very mention of the word "sin" does indeed have that connotation come to think of it! You have every right to reply to any comment on any of my videos. In fact, I invite you to do so, any time you like, as long as you don't get ugly about it. What I was addressing in the original comment, however, had little or nothing to do with your issues.

Kindly tell me, what else is there to believe then what others have told you, or what you have observed yourself, unless it is God who reveals Himself to you, either verbally, by nature, or even by what others have said. There are many things "others have said" that I decidedly do not believe. Many of those things are said by "religious people." I don't know what boxes you're into, but I'm always looking for bigger ones. I've never found a box yet big enough to contain God.

Yes, it is written in a minor key, and the words to HRS alone are a rather sad story. Thank God, though, for amazing grace, or all our stories would only be sad. Don't get me wrong, I like sad songs, but I prefer ones that leave you with a sense of hope even in the midst of sadness.
