The Bobby Orr Rush -- Catch Me If You Can!!

Uploaded by: 85highlander
Video Description:
Remember the pre-cable days huddled around the old black and white TV, fidgeting with the antenna to get WSBK TV38 to come in to see the Bruins?
And who can forget doing a jig to the opening tune by the Ventures ("Nutty")! These clips are a little "grainy" and seen best when viewed in the smaller screen but they are a reminder of the days of watching the Bruins before NESN (great reception today, but the team was way better then). And, o
f course, the best Bruin of them all (and greatest all around player ever!) wore Number Four!

I used to watch every game that was on TV38 when I was younger.I have met this fine person on a few occasions and he is a better person than a hockey player. Larry Bird before games at the Garden would stare at Bobby Orr's retired number.

If Gretzky had to do what Orr did when he first game into the league,he would not have survived.Orr had to show he could fight and he was hit everytime someone could possibly catch him. Gretzky never once had to defend himself and Heaven forbid that someone lay a glove on him.I loved to watch Gretzky but it was a different style of play that enabled Gretzky to put up the numbers he did.

Bobby is the only athlete of 30 years ago that, when you watch him dominate then, you get the idea that he would STILL be the best in the game today.

Somehow Orr reminds me of Sergei Fedorov. Even more now 'cause Fedorov plays occasionally D in Capitals.
Bobby Orr's last ... ( 1 week ago by ycanada)
Bobby Orr's last full season in 1974-75: 46 goals, 89 assists and 135 points. The scary thing is that he was on the decline at that point due to injuries. I never believed that until i saw footage of Orr before 1970 when he his knees were still good. He lost substantial speed by 1975 yet adjusted his game to produce big numbers.

Yeah, in the last ten years, they have this silly skills competition. In every instance, the fastest skater was a forward.
Good thing I don't know hockey, cuase if I did; I'd be smart like you. D-uhh!!

The greatest player the world has ever seen had seasons of 215, and 212 points, and scored 92 goals in his best scoring tear.
Yesterday was the ... ( 1 week ago by Bleeney)
Yesterday was the 30th anniversary of Bobby Orr's retirement from the NHL because of knee injuries. This quote by Leaf's coach Ron Wilson is from yesterday's Toronto Sun: "For me, he was the greatest player of all time. Hands down. IT'S NOT EVEN CLOSE"" REAL hockey men (i.e. not younger journalists from the Gretzky-loving Hockey News) who've actually seen them both play overwhelmingly name Orr as the #1 player of all time: Howe, Hull, Savard, Clarke, Cherry, Sittler, Quinn, Hawerchuk...
92G 215Pts. ... ( 1 week ago by Bleeney)
92G 215Pts. Astonishing numbers, but put them in context. Gretzky was a forward who avoided all physical contact and rarely saw his own side of center ice (+/- below zero 7 times...a shameful statistic for the so-called "great" one). He played a one way game on a powerhouse team in the most wide-open era in history. Orr played a tough, all-round game in a more violent, tight-checking era. With defense being his first priority, he still had 46G, 135Pts while winning the Norris. NOT EVEN CLOSE!

This is my favorite year to compare for Gretzky to Orr's 70-71 season. Gretzky gets 215 pts..Orr gets 139 pts. Who is more valuable. It is obvious isn't it?? That year the Oilers had 426 gf and 310 ga in 80 games. Gretzky in all on ice situations had 260 gf and 162 ga. Amazing numbers. 70-71 The bruins had 399 gf and 204 ga in 78 games...what!! Orr in all on ice situations had 258 gf and 85 ga. Higher gf per game and half..half the goals against. 2.22 pg+ vs 1.23 pg+ while on ice for Orr.

There is a mythic thing about how Bobby Orr played the game. I was a Ranger fan in the day, and we held up Brad Park as our Orr, but there was really no comparison. It's something like in Old Man and the Sea, where the main character dreams about lions playing on the beach. There is something so fluid and beautiful about how Orr played what is granted a very violent game -- and that is captured so well here -- that when you think about it makes you sleep happily at night.

A team of 5 Bobby Orrs would beat a team of 5 Gretzkys or a team of 5 of Anyone Elses. No player of any professional team sport ever CONTROLLED games like Orr did. No other professional team athlete made fools of the opposition to the point where crowds could be heard audibly laughing, both at Boston Garden and on the road. You know you're watching greatness when you're watching something you've never seen before or since. That would be Bobby Orr. END OF STORY.

Ask Gordie Howe, ask Montreal Gazette HOF NHL columnist Red Fisher, and then ask HOFer Milt Schmidt. Between those three guys, they've witnessed NHL hockey from the 1920's to the present, and ALL three of them say Bobby Orr is the best player they ever saw. Compared to them, what exactly the hell do YOU know that they don't? I'll take their word for it, thanks. END OF STORY.
