Physics 10 - Lecture 01: Atoms and Heat

Uploaded by: ucberkeley
Video Description:
Physics 10: Physics for Future Presidents. Spring 2006. Professor Richard A. Muller. The most interesting and important topics in physics, stressing conceptual understanding rather than math, with applications to current events. Topics covered may vary and may include energy and conservation, radioactivity, nuclear physics, the Theory of Relativity, lasers, explosions, earthquakes, superconductors, and quantum physics. Holy shit this guy ... ( 2 months ago by BlackRiven)
Holy shit this guy just bullshits the whole lecture. He takes the simplest types of scientific trivia and spends minutes saying pointless things about them. Start talking about science already! The whole lecture can be summarized into 30 minutes of actual information.

Another great clip! I would have loved to be in this course.

you can;t create energy, you convert it. when you pick up a mass, such as a stone, you are converting 'food energy' into gravititational potential (the energy the stone has because of its height). when you drop the stone, the gravitational potential energy is converted into kinetic energy (energy of movement) as it falls.

You definetly can't 'make' energy, but yes I agree with your point, mass is energy. However, its more useful to think of mass being converted into energy, as matter has different properties to 'energy' per se

I hate those. Might as well read the text all night then sleep in class.

How is it possible ... ( 4 weeks ago by Mutske161)
How is it possible that in light electro and magnetism forces have interaction, when they have no time to interact? t=0 for light.
And how is it possible that light when it knows no time still has 3 dimentions, because 3 dimentions alway's conclude the 4th dimention time.

because space and time are emergent properties of quantum interactions? Actually I have no idea. But that is the whole game, trying to unify nature at the various levels we are aware of.

yes, for light, there is no such thing as time. they "see" thier entire eternity at the same time

he pretty smart but maybe not then agin we'll see if can answer can you? because the thing what i'm confused over is lightening. like is lightening fire? what is lightening? is there, is it cause it's close to space that it's alljaggly? and there's no air in space? can it burn stuff? like could lignhtnig burn fire? does anyone know if theres such a thing as lightenig at the total bottom of the ocean? they(the fish) prolly don't call it lighgtenng cuz fish don't talk lol.oh god what is it!!???

I think its a course for people who don't know much physics and don't plan on studying it, just to get a very basic knowledge. "Physics for poets" or something like that.
Notice there is not math.
I think you're ... ( 2 weeks ago by ProsecuteCheneyEtAl)
I think you're missing a basic point: time is relative to velocity. So if I am going a zillion miles an hour time will be going the normal rate for me, but it will be going slower for everything slower to me.
So, if you were travelling at the speed of light, time would be going the normal speed for you and stopped for everybody else not going at the speed of light. The term for "everthing going at the same velocity" is "inertial frame of reference." (continued below)
For the perspective ... ( 2 weeks ago by Mutske161)
For the perspective of light we move at the speed of light calvinhobbesliker..... I'ff u move with the lightspeed away from home, then u will see your home move away from u with the same speed u move. And with constant speed and no other reference u can not tell what or who is moving. ;)Thats a law Einstein gave us.U can do it with gravitie also..
If you move away ... ( 2 weeks ago by ProsecuteCheneyEtAl)
If you move away from home at the speed of light you will see your home not move at all. That's the point.
Stop thinking about time for a minute. As you accelerate towards the speed of light it takes longer and longer for light to reach you. So the whole outside world seems to slow down as you go faster. As you get very close to the speed of light your home will become completely frozen. Why? Because
light can't reach you anymore. So what you see is the last light that hit you. Forever.

i go to uc berkeley, and i can tell you that not all classes are like this. like ProsecuteCheneyEtAl said, this is a course for non-physics people just to give them a non-math background in physics and how it relates to everyday life. note the name of the course: physics for future presidents (not physicists or scientists or anything like that). some college courses are pretty easy though.

I think you got the ... ( 1 day ago by AtamaCardel)
I think you got the time dilation backwards, the faster you go the more that time slows down for you. So something like a 10 year trip at near light speed for you would be maybe 26000 years for everyone moving at non relativistic speeds.
